This Soldier Life: The Diaries of Romine H. Ostrander, 1863 and 1865, in Colorado Territory

Annotated by Paul A. Malkoski

Romine Ostrander came west as a miner but spent nearly four years as a Civil War private in the First Colorado Cavalry. In his diaries of military and frontier life, published here for the first time, Ostrander recalls the battle of Glorieta Pass and pursues a band of supposed "Confederate guerillas" on a killing spree (in reality the serial murdering Espinosa brothers). Traversing the plains on horseback from Fort Lyon to Denver to Wyoming, Ostrander meets American Indians, lives off the land, and prefers riding fifty miles a day to lying about camp watching his comrades gamble away their pay.
