Oshier/Auge/Auger info needed

I am looking for information on my Great-grandfather and great-grandmother who came from Quebec to Northern, NY, (clinton County), mid to later 1800's. His name was Peter Oshier Sr, in English, but the French spelling I believe was Auge or Auger. His wife was marie Brunet. Neither read or wrote, so there are varied spellings because most people who wrote the name did so phonetically. I believe his name would have been Pierre Auge/Auger. Family history passed down says that he left Canada because he had been disowned by his family for marrying Marie Brunet. She had been Married before and they were very strict catholic and that was against the religion at the time. Any info or point in some direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
