March 19, 1704 A child of Caleb Osborn’s; Caleb
This is the Caleb most people try to equate to the Caleb Osborn in Rowan County NC.
From the following record it would seem that if the two are the same then Caleb would have been arrested by the British for being in the Militia at 77 years of age. A stretch.

1781 March 21 Rebels Confined in the provost Morgan Osborne, Caleb Osborn Taken at their house Recomd for Parole ( It is clear from the record that it shows Morgan and Caleb as a pair)
Caleb was in NC by 1756

Samuel Osborn brother of Caleb Died in 1760:
1760, Feb 12 Osborn Samuel of the Borough of Elizabeth, Essex Co.
Sons; Samuel, and Michael. Grandsons Cooper Osborn and Adonijah Osborn ( under age). Lot at the Papermill Damn, a meadow called Osborn's Land, Land on the eastside of the West Branch of Rahway River, Between Thomas Baylie, the hiway, the river and the Jury line. Executors, son Michael, and James Carpenter. Wit Daniel Ogden jr., Caleb Osborn, Thomas Taylor. Proved Feb 19, 1760 Lib G pg 142
1761, Aug 13 Inventory made by Caleb Osborn and John Osborn.
As you can see Caleb was there to make an inventory of his Estate in 1761, a long way from Rowan County NC.

Who was this Samuel? A brother? Then it can not be the same Caleb as the one who’s brother died in 1760.
Perhaps the Samuel Osborn of the Mathew Osborn line of Delaware? If so then it would indicated that Caleb has a relationship with that line.
1762 July 25 P+QVol 2 Pg 426 Frederick Fraile Vs Caleb Osborn Edvidence Edwd Roberts, Ewd Rurner, Cathr Koon, Ephrm Osborn, Mrs Rebek Osborn, Nehemiah Holloway, Henry Horah, John Frohock Wm Giles
Here much is made of the Ephrm Osborn and Caleb being brothers. Yet who is Mrs Rebek Osborn? The only one of record is married to one of the Osborn’s of the Mathew Osborn line. If so then we have a possibility of two references of Caleb to Mathew’s line. This more then the one to Ephrm and certainly more than any to NJ.
Who is the Caleb that dies in Nj in 1797?
1797, Nov 2 Osborn Caleb Sr of Elizabeth Twsp., Essex Co Int.

Mr Cook believes it to be The Caleb Baptized in 1704,and it would be his son who dies in 1799:
1799, Feb 11 Osborn Caleb of Elizabeth Twsp., Essex Co Int
Adm'x Susanna Osborn, Fellowbondsmen, Abner Osborn and John Jewell; all of said Co. Lib 38 Pg261
1799 Feb 12 Inventory by Abner Osborn and Josiah Woodruff File 9550-9553G
There is ample evidence that Caleb b. abt 1704 had son named Caleb as they both are signers of at least two petitions on in 1750 and one in 1755. along with a Samuel Osborn.
Caleb living from 1704 – 1793 seems like a stretch to me, but Caleb leaving one son behind and moving to NC and returning for his brother’s Inventory, and being arrested by the British at 77 seems like a stretch also.
If we can extrapolate ages from the ages of his children or Grandchildren then it would seem that Caleb would have been born abt 1720 or so. This would then the be age of the Caleb who died in1799, or possibly 1797, if one wants dispute the age of 93 for the Caleb who was b. abt. 1704.
I conclude that Caleb of Rowan County is not the same Caleb or Calebs of NJ.
