Hi Joe,
I've recently been trying to check up on the Osborn(e)s as a Kinship means of identifying some of the Penningtons who lived in NW North Carolina and Southwest Virginia. The so-called Pennington "Research" Association has done about the same thing to these Pennington ancestors as the Osborn(e) searchers seem to be doing to yours.Plop an ancestor here in this lineage, term any person who sent you the information a reference, (then you send it back to him to be referenced in turn),quote a purchased CD full of the same sources. It's pathetic, but you will never win with these people, and I think you need to give up.They're the real losers beause they will never find their true ancestry.
I think I have found the source for the Jonathan-Gretta Holman business. The book:Scofield, Flossie, "One line of descent, Thomas Alley, Jacob Need and allied lines." Neodesha, Kan.: unknown, 1973, 73 pgs.She states on page 21 "According to unverified information from Mrs. H. R. Saffell and Maud Elias's "My Father's People" the parents of ephraim Osborne are Jonathan Osborne and Gretta Holman." She goes on to quote some of the stuff being debated here.
There is quite a wonderful book by an excellent historian, Robert W. Ramsay. In "Carolina Cradle, Settlement of the Northwest Carolina Frontier 1747-1762." Dr. Ramsay gives gives naps of localities and cites the documents he used to prepare the book.It is important to recognize when settlement began, Rowan County encompassed virtually all of northwestern North Carolina. The Rowan page of the US GenWeb says, "is an area roughly stretching north from the southeast corner of Randolph County to the Virginia border and west following a line roughly outlined by the southern borders of Randolph and Rowan counties into the eastern counties of Tennessee." There is a map.The URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncrowan/ro-oldrowan.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~ncrowan/ro-oldrowan.htm
"Carolina Cradle" addresses that portion of the original Rowan County which lies between the Yadkin and Cataba Rivers.Dr. Ramsay states that "Caleb (and possibly Ephraim Osborne, kinsmen of Alexander Osborne migrated to the Yadkin Valley from Elizabeth Town, Essex County, NJ." He gives as a reference for this "New Jersey Wills, XXX, 346."Alexander was a Colonel in the militia, and a public servant in Anson County, and Rowan.Ramsay does not mention Jonathan, however. I looked up the Osborne names in NJ Calendar of Wills and found several records for Caleb Osbornes and one for Edward:"Date: 10 Jul 1711
Location: Elizabeth Town, N. J. will of. Brother Jams, Joshua, son of Caleb Osborn, Samuel, son of Thomas Bancraf; the heirs of the real and personal estate. Executors--Efrem Osborn, Jams Osborn and Johnathan Lynly. Witnesses--William Looker, John Looker, John Radley. Proved June 14, 1714. Lib. 1, p. 476, and Essex Wills On the same sheet: Draft of an indenture, by which Benjamin Bunhill of Elizabeth Town binds himself, with the consent of his mother Abegell Bunhill, as apprentice to Anthony Ollife and wife; not dated. Page: 348"There's lots here to follow up on, and I've gained clues for my own research.
I found an internet biography of an Alexander descendent:
http://home.att.net/~osborne-origins/biograph/bio_j1.htmhttp://home.att.net/~osborne-origins/biograph/bio_j1.htm
Bio. of James W. Osborne-2598.There are other Osbornes here too. This biography states that Alexander died in 1777 and "he was buried at Centre Church in the county of Iredell, only a short distance from his home."
http://home.att.net/~osborne-origins/biograph/bio_j1.htmhttp://home.att.net/~osborne-origins/biograph/bio_j1.htm
The 1759 tax list gives Osborne names:Alexr. OSBORN & Negroes Tom, Will & Dinah, Metthew OSBORN, Sam's. OSBORN
John OSBORN, William OSBORN, Ephrim OSBORN, Jospeh OSBORN
Caleb OSBORN.The same list records Benejah and Levy/Levi Pennington.I think Benejah's descendants are those who ended in that area which became Ashe County.Levi may be the Quaker settler of Guilford County, although there are Levis found in the Benejah families as well.I have a page on Levi:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~amxroads/Levi/index.htmlhttp://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~amxroads/Levi/index.html
And there is a Pennington NC Land page by Alice Sanders which mentions Enoch Osborn in 1778.

The Osborn(e) and Pennington families were later connected in SE Kentucky counties. Two or three Pennington lineages presently come out of these families, but possibly are actually connected.
I am not an Osborn(e) researcher -- I am not even a researcher of the Pennington lineages connected with the Osborn(e)s (I don't think!) but many of my American Crossroads discussion list at Rootsweb are.I also have my American Crossroads website at Rootsweb:http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~amxroads/http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~amxroads/
We seek to address the research difficulties you are encountering with people who don't know how to research, but who nevertheless want to disseminate erroneous information.
I have many families of interest who lived in SW Virginia and NW North Carolina, and they are mixed in with these families as well. The Alleys are possibly Dutch Alling, Ailing, and I have an Alley Watts mentioned in my Revolutionary War ancestor's -- John Watts -- I want to
find.My maternal Smiths, Watts and Marcums/Markhams are mixed in with my paternal McDaniels and Penningtons.
Good Luck with your research, Joe.Forget the negative others.
Carolyn
