Pat Boggess;
I, too, have some serious doubts that the STEPHEN OSBORNE, b c1818/19, who marr. NANCY MULLINS [Pike Co. Marr. Rec. below] was the same STEPHEN that was marr. to LUCY OSBORNE.
_______
*MARRIAGE [Stephen Osborne to Nancy Mullins]: Pike Co., KY Marr. Rec., #649
• License issued June 25, 1840 by John D. Mims Clk for marriage of STEPHEN ORSBURN and NANCY MULLENS.Clerk certified that "the orial consent of WILLIAM MULLENS parent of the said NANCY MULLENS was given."
• Bond signed by STEPHEN ORSBURN and WILLIAM MULLENS.
• Married July 2, 1840 by WM. TACKITT, M.G. “I do certify as a preacher of the gospel that I did pair together in marriage the within named Stephen Osborne and Nancy Mullens the 2nd day of July 1840.”[aka Elder Wm. Tackitt Sr., 1779-1851, s/o Phillip Sr.]
_______
Although the obit [on file] for William Thomas Osborne [aka Walter Thomas] lists his parents as STEPHEN & LUCY OSBORNE, no marr. rec. for this couple has been located by us [doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist], it does seem very unlikely [as per census records] that STEPHEN, b c1818/19, maintained a 2nd family in Virginia [although certainly not an unheard of occurrence].
I’ll have to admit, thru many years’ of experience, that I have little faith in what is found in the LDS records, other than those from their microfilm copies of actual court records, for which we genealogists owe a debt.And, I don’t know the validity of the of the document by “Mrs. Adkins” in Utah, but if this is Valine Adkins, she has done a fair amount of research on the family of her foreparents, BENJAMIN OSBORNE & SUSANNAH BAKER, and had contributed much on her line to The Tackett Family Assn., although documentation provided is “fragmentary” and not footnoted to individual entries - but that was many years ago before computers.
The “jury is still out,” but of the several WILLIAM MULLINS’ & NANCY MULLINS’ of about the same age group, it does seem most likely that the parents of NANCY MULLINS, wife of Stephen, was WILLIAM H. “Cuddy Bill” and ELIZABETH “Betsy” ROBERTS MULLINS [marr.rec. 1818, Floyd Co., KY].
The NANCY MULLINS who marr. HIRAM “Grand Sire” OSBORNE, 1798-1892, [marr. rec. 1819, Floyd Co., KY / photos on file for both and both bur. in the C.E. Tackett Cem., Indian Creek, Pike Co., KY.] ] was a dau. of WILLIAM “Coonie” & RUTH FOSTER MULLINS. [Wm. “Coonie” Mullins, b c1766, also “reported” to have been bur. on the C.E. Tackett Cem.]
Then, there was old WILLIAM “Bald Head” MULLINS, c1784-1859, who marr. JUDITH FOSTER, 1786-1849, [marr. rec. 1803, Franklin Co., VA / some suggest that this Franklin Co., VA couple was NOT the same as the Pike Co., KY family].I do not find any documentation that NANCY MULLINS who marr. STEPHEN OSBORNE was the dau. of this couple - although a lot of very erroneous OSBORNE/MULLINS data can be found on various websites that will list this as “fact.”
The “expert” on these early MULLINS families is Cornelius Carroll of Harold, KY. [pub. of “Old Floyd Co. Families,” and also a member of The Tackett Family Assn.]
Now, if we could just prove the parentage for the “old man,” SOLOMON OSBORNE, 1765-1852, we would have solved a major stumbling block.
