Osborne burial custom?
My grandmother, Vada Belle OSBORNE SIDDENS, who was b. 1882 on Fiddlers' Ridge, Union Twp., Effingham Ct., Illinois, daughter of Francis Marion Osborne, son of Levi Osborne, practiced a custom of placing either muscle shells or sea shells on the grave. Her families (OSBORNE, LILLY, AND PRATERS) came from the hills of N./S. Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky, some by way of Virginia, Ohio to Illinois in early 1800s. This memory was refreshed to me by my mother, now I would like to know if this was a local custom or one practiced elsewhere. All of her local relatives are buried in the Osborne (Ridge) Cemetary in Union Twp. Any information will be helpful, thank you.
