Notes regarding John Edward Oram AKA Wallace James from a descendant;

John Edward Orrum joined the Confederate Army around the start of the war in 1861 or 1862. He was captured by the Union at McMinnville Tennessee in 1863. He then joined the Union Army. (He was considered a "Deserter" by the Confederate Army). He served with the Union until 17 Dec 1864 and was honorably discharged. He re-enlisted and served until 20 Apr 1865. Sometime after this, he went to Indiana and re-enlisted in the Union and was sent to Govenor's Island in New York. From there he was sent to Maryland and there he "Deserted" the Union Army also. He went to Winchester, Virginia and there in 1870 or around that time, changed his name (not legally, just adopted it) to Wallace James. His reason for doing this was, "he said he had got tired of the stigma of having served in the Confederate Army and then he had contracted an unfortunate marriage, his wife had turned out bad, went wrong, you might say and he had to leave. He says these two things caused him to want to get away to someplace where he would not be known."
