Hi, Donna, I am off to Philadelphia for a few days next week to see what I can find about the Philadelphia Orths. I have been working with a gentleman in Utah who has access to the LDS files, who wrote the following: "I was not able to find anything on Sophia Orth in the 1860 or 1870 Philadelphia census; also could not find her listed as a paper box maker in the actual 1880 census (so I don't know where Ms. Cowell got her data from). There was a Clewell family, but not the right one. I did find her mentioned as being married to Joseph R. Clewell in the IGI index. I also was not able to find her as a child of Alexander and Christiana (but just because I couldn't find her doesn't mean she wasn't their child). Also, they were not in the 1870 census. I also tried to find her in the City Cirectories for 1846, 1847, 1848, and 1856, hoping I could find her listed separately because she was 'single' in between marriages at those times, but no such luck. Also, I could not find a 'Pauline' who would fit. "I found the 1880 census listing with Christiana staying with the McCully family. I also found all of those Orths living in close proximity in the mid-1860s, but even though the names were similar I just could not say they were brothers or related for sure, based on the City Directory listings. I didn't see 'Sophia Orth' there. Joseph Clewell was listed in the 1856 Directory, but only him alone. But, as a result of (this information), I am now able to identify the bracketed ages of Christiana's children in the 1840 census." This is the census: FHL film 0020555, 1840 Pennsylvania census, page 156, family is listed under 'C. Orth.' Ages are bracketed as follows; males: 1 <5, 1 5-10, 1 10-15, & 1 15-20 females: 2 5-10, 1 10-15 1 40-50 Christiana is probably the female in the 40-50 bracket, about 42 years old. Samuel is probably the male in the 'under 5' bracket, about 2 years old. Louisa would be in the 5-10 bracket, about 5 years old. Henry would be in the 5-10 bracket, about 7 years old. John and Phillip are most likely the males in the 10-15 and 15-20 brackets, and perhaps Sophia is the female in the 10-15 bracket, age abt. 12. The other female in the 5-10 bracket is as yet unknown. You asked about the church my ancestors were married in. Samuel Orth and and Catherine (Kate) Mariah Mush were married in the Wharton Street Methodist Episcopal Church on Sept 29, 1864. The church was at the intersection of Wharton and 4th Streets, incidentally, which would have bee the same block where the Orths you mentioned were living. Louisa married Samuel McCully in the Gloria Dei Church on Apr 17, 1851. Beyond that, I have no information. With Alexander's name, thanks to you, we have been able to get additional information about him, including that he arrived here without his wife, Christiana, on the ship 'Christopher Gore' on Sept 6 1817, listed his country of origin as France (!), was naturalized on Sep 25, 1828, was a baker by trade, as was his wife, and died in Philadelphia on Nov 07, 1837, the same year his youngest child, my ancestor Samuel, was born.
