I am Rick Ortenburger. I have been researching my surname Ortenburger for 18 years. I have connected with cousins in Germany who have also researched the surname. Christl Ortenburger of Munich, Germany has researched for over 30 years. Horst Ortenburger has researched for over 50 years. The combination of all of this research provided many links to the family of Ortenburger's. Christl & Rick have written a 644 page book entitled "The Orttenburger Family - A Journey Over Countries & Time - 1543-1999. It is still available. The roots are traced back to Niederkleen, Germany in the 1600's. Before that we believe the name came from the town of Ortenberg in Hessen, Germany. Rick believes he has the direct line back to Matthias Ortenberg to the year 1548. From there the surname goes back to perhaps the year 1520. In the late 1700's a direct ancestor Johannes Ortenburger went to Schlesien with his family, where the family lived & flourished until WWII. Some members still live in this area, which is now Poland. Many descendants are now in Germany. Some are in the USA. I'd like to hear from anyone with a connection to the Ortenburger (Orttenburger, Ortenberger, von Ortenburg, Orthenburger, Orttenberger, etc.) surname. Write me at email@example.com. Please also post here.
