Roger has ask several of us who are actively working on the Orrick genealogy to participate here. We are happy to do so.
I would like to discuss information that exist and relates to Benjamin b. abt.1765. This Benjamin is considered to be the father of the E. TN Orrick/Oricks. The problem for this group is that no one can prove who the father of Ben is. I can't either but I will look at some facts and try to formulate what is the most likely scenario to me.
Names are important and lead us when absolute documentation does not exist. We find three names in 1779 on a tax list and in 1790 on a census in Randolph Co NC. These are William, John and Samuel Orrick. Benjamin Orrick's son James Madison Orrick named sons Benjamin,Samuel William and John. William Orricks decendants use the same names. It is not coincidence. We know William is the father of the AK line. Samuel and John have influence on the E.TN line. The census would seem to show that this William is James Griniffe Orrick's son. The census data shows children in his household that match what we already know. John on the 1790 census has a son over 16 years old. Samuel has no children in his household. Benjamin Orrick does not have his own household in this 1790 census.
Where is our Benjamin b. abt 1765 then?
Benjamins first son was named Robinson. Robinson stated that he was born in NC on a census. That places Benjamin in NC also. I would suggest that one of these three 1790 NC Orricks is the father of Benjamin Orrick. William is not the father because his children are well documented. Samuel has no children in his household. We have only John as a viable canidate for Benjamins father. Remember John has a son over 16 in 1790.

Well, who are these three NC Orricks? William is the son of James Griniffe Orrick. Who are Samuel and John? We see John and Samuel Orrick together in 1759 in the Cherokee wars in SC. Benjamin, Samuel and John were all on the roster there. Curiously, Benjamin was not in the same unit as Sam and John. Samuel and John desert. Benjamin does not. If Benjamin was the father of Samuel and John I contend that he would have been in the same unit and would have deserted with them.

James Griniffe Orrick! I can't find a thing about his wife or wifes. He is b. in 1709. He should be having children through the 1730s and 40s. We know that he had William when he was 46 in 1755. It is hard to believe that he had only two sons through all those years. I assume that Nicholas Orrick is Williams brother.

We just recently, thanks to Jerry Orick, found proof that James Griniffe Orrick had a brother named Benjamin in 1721. We find James and Benjamin Orrick signing a will together in 1738. We find Benjamin,James and John on a tithe list in VA in 1749.I believe that Benjmin and James left MD about 1740 and went to VA. The time line here leaves no doupt in my mind that this is James Griniffe and his brother Benjamin on the tithe list. I believe the tithe given was nine squirrels :) Importantly,James list John under his name. This is normally done when a father and son are involved. This certainly would allow for the possability that our 1790 census John could be James Griniffe's son. The fact that we have a known James Griniffe son in NC with John and Samuel leads me to wonder if these three are brothers. The lack of records for James allows for that possability.

I am not postulating that my interpretations of the data are correct. My opinions may change as more information becomes available.

I invite all of you to help. More information is becoming available all the time .
