The stone bearing the name Olive Cynthis Ormsby, was placed in the cemetery in remembrance of a California emigrant. This marks the route taken by Major William Ormsby of San Francisco between 1849 and 1852.She was the child of Major Ormsby, and died March 17, 1851.
In one of the histories of Utah there is an article prepared by Dr. Oliver Ormsby, who passed through Sessions Settlement when he was twelve years old, on the way to California.Quote from history:"Major William Ormsby and his brother John S. Ormsby, left Pennsylvania in 1849 and went to California.Early in 1852 Major Ormsby went back to Pennsylvania to bring his and his brother's families to California. There were about one hundred souls in the company and they were fitted out with the finest horses and equipment. However, when they reached Salt Lake, they had lost all of their horses and carriages and remained in Salt Lake two weeks to rest and recruit."
In the early 1800's the land where this cemetery is located was high ground, but due to sub-irrigation in later years, it was necessary to stop burying people there. After 1957, most people who died in Sessions Settlement were buried in Bountiful.Sometime afterwards, roads were laid and some graves were found outside the fence. These graves were then moved to the Bountiful Cemetery.

In the year 1895, I was asked to take a course of study in obstetrics, as midwives were the only doctors, and one was needed. I had a large family and very little to do with. My girls, May and Nettie, were old enought to look after the family while I was away from home. (May was 15 and Nettie 10). I accepted this offer mainly thinking I could help provide for my family in this way and that kind of work had always appealed to me. I studied under Dr. O. C. Ormsby of Logan for 18 months, going to Logan 3 days a week, bringing my work home and taking it back and getting instructions. I passed my examination in the State and County building, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1896 (six physicians being present at the examination), and I recieved my diploma and license to practice obstetrics in the State of Utah.
Soon after starting to practice, Dr. O. C. Ormsby left Logan and his son, Oliver Ormsby, returned from studying medicine and took his father's place. I worked with him a great deal for several years until he moved back east. Dr. D. C. Budge took his place and his home.

On January 22, 1858, Frances Ann's first child, Esther Ann, was born. On April 20, 1858 Abraham, Janette Maria's first child entered this world. Delina Caroline, Caroline's first child was born June 23, 1859. Not only was Samuel's family growing rapidly, but so was his list of responsibilities. In 1859 he was elected Probate Judge of Box Elder county--a post he held for fifteen years. During this time he was very active in civic affairs. He saw a need for reasonable hotel accommodations for travelers and so he opened the first hotel in Brigham City to give weary sojourners every comfort the frontier could be expected to provide. It was in this building that the Post Office was also maintained. In later year, Dr. Oliver Ormsby (who married Maretta October 11, 1869) had a drug store in the same building.

Dr. O. C. Ormsby, a young physician and a graduate of the Rush Medical College, was the first to enter the drug business in Logan. Upon invitation, he came from Brigham City to Logan with a small stock of drugs. Very shortly he built up a good business and founded the Pioneer Drug Company, the first drug store in the valley. In 1878, the firm was changed to the name of Ormsby and Riter, and Mr. B. F. Riter moved from Salt Lake City to Logan and became Dr. Ormsby’s working companion. Later the Riter brothers took over the interest of Dr. Ormsby and the firm became known as Riter Brothers. In 1891, the partnership was incorporated and became known as the Riter Brothers Drug Company.

The history of the company can be told in large part by tracing the career of Benjamin Franklin Riter (1859-1925). The son of Levi Evans and Rebecca Wollerton Riter, B. F. was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 31, 1859. After studying chemistry at the University of Utah, Riter started work in 1876 as a pharmacist for retail druggists Taggart and Son in Salt Lake City. In 1878, he worked for George W. Hoyt in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1880 Riter formed a partnership with Dr. O. C. Ormsby and went into business in Logan, Utah as Ormsby & Riter. The company filled an important niche as it was the only drug store between Ogden, Utah and Helena, Montana. Finally, in 1891, Riter Brothers Drug company was incorporated in Logan.

On 30 Apr 1882 it was reported that 22 had been baptized since the last conference. At this time the chapel was reported as filled every Sunday evening and quite a number of strangers were attending regularly. Twelve more were baptized in the next two months. A tea party was held at the departure of Oliver C. Ormsby at which 150 persons attended and the choir sang.

William M. Ormsby had a younger brother, Dr. Oliver C. Ormsby, who drifted east from Russian River in 1861, and went into business in Manti and Brigham City, Utah. Dr. Ormsby settled in Logan at the turn of the century before moving to Rexburg, Idaho, where he died in 1916 at age 72. There is no apparent connection with Olive Cynthia Ormsby. And so the tantalizing puzzles in history continue.

Hope this helps with your research on Dr. O.C. Ormsby, it appears that this was a common address for him.
