As I mentioned in the posting on the 21st, the relationship of the Butlers to the Ormonds is as follows: The Ormonds were given the Viceroy-ship or Ireland when Theobald Fitzwalter was given lands in Munster by King John 1 ("Prince John" of the Robin Hood tales). Theobald came to Ireland with William de Burgos (later, "the Burkes").Theobald was given the lordship of upper and lower Ormond. The family took the Butler surname because the first Theobald Fitzwalter II was the first "Butler" (Steward, Governor) of Ireland, and took the name, Le Botiler. So, many (especially of the official heirs) were "Butler Ormond".Some descendants kept the name Butler, while others kept the name Ormond.
The Ormonds were Normans. They came from "Walter" in the Domesday book, who buried King Harold at William's order after the Battle of Hastings. The title "Earl" was given by King Edward III to James Butler I when he married Elizabeth Plantagenet, daughter of King Edward I ("Longshanks").
