Dear Doreen,
In Prussia they had a military system similar to what is used in Israel or Switzerland; every male at 18 years of age, goes into the military for a nominal training period(3 months), then you are on active duty for seven years and in the militia for five years and in the reserves for life but, will serve whenever and for as long as the King says you will.If you are determined to be unemployed, indigent, in trouble with the law, in debt, unpopular or unlucky because the state needs soldiers, off you go.If you enlist, it is for a period of 20 years (many European nations had 20 year enlistments as the standard). All members of the noble class were automatically in the military as officers for life. I am not quite clear about this, but it seems that there was some kind of legal or societal prohibition preventing men who had not completed the initial seven years of active duty from marrying. This system along with a large standing army (with superior organization, tactics and really good artillary), allowed Prussia to succeed against larger nations such as Russia, Austria and France. Prussia was pretty much allways at war or getting ready for war with someone.Perhapse the prohibition on marriage had something to do with your Grandparents emmigration. And oh yes, the penalty for desertion was hanging.Maat
