ORGAN in Canada
I am not related in any way to the ORGAN surname, but came upon the name while reading other sites on this forum.
In Canada, out of a population of 32 million, the phone book shows 300 ORGAN listings. Of these, 41% are listed in Newfoundland, Canada's most easterly province (it is closer to Ireland than to Toronto), which was first settled in 1497 (yes, 1-4-9-7) by English fishermen looking for the endless supply of codfish. From that year, it became England's first - and oldest - colony, until in 1949 (452 years later) it voted to join Canada (by only 51%).
Another 35% of total ORGAN surnames are now in Ontario, Canada's most populated province (13 million out of 32 million, 40% of the total).
Nova Scotia is the other province where the rest of the ORGAN names are found (19% of the total), and out of these, about 14 of 58 (24%) are in Cape Breton.
What this means is that 95% of all ORGAN surnames in Canada are in 3 geographic areas of the country. And 60% of all the ORGAN names are in Newoundland and Nova Scotia.
This makes perfect sense, when you think that the east coast of Canada is where most early settlers landed from England, Ireland, or Scotland since the early 1600's.
