Origin of name OraHood
Posted by: Robin OraHood (ID *****8371) Date: June 28, 2003 at 06:42:06

Our family name OraHood originated during the Norman invasion of England when my ancestor Hood assisted the Normans. After the Normans withdrew from England the Star Chamber, the high ecclesiastical court of England, passed an oral (spoken) sentence against my ancestor. They affixed the word "Oral" to his name as a sign of disgrace, like Hester Prynes Scarlet Letter, and Hood became Oral-Hood. Generations later when an Oral-Hood immigrated to the US the spelling was changed to OralHood and OraHood. Hyphenated names were not accepted here.
