Answer to request is as follows:
I didn't find an obituary, death or funeral notice for your CURIK, and I checked the Oregonian newspaper from June 13th - June 25th. I verified the death date you gave, 12 June 1960, was on the Oregon Death Index. The index also gave the death certificate as #7835. Laura probably already gave you that, or you probably already found it on Ancestry.
I don't think any of the following information will help you prove Vaclav CURIK is your husband's biological father, but here is some more information. It may help you obtain other documents. From the information I found, it looks like Vaclav wasn't in Portland, except when he returned home from his job on the many ships he was on. This may account for why I didn't find a newspaper obit, and maybe because it looks like he was probably single because of divorce or death of sopuse, or may never have married. It would be interesting to find out who gave the information for the death certificate. If it was one of the people from one of the ships he was on, they may not have had much information to give, and, because it looks like he rented a place to live most of the time, he probably didn't have but a couple of people to attend a funeral. You mentioned a sister....maybe she gave the information for the death certificate.
Since he was foreign born, I checked a source called the Foreign Voter Registration Cards for Multnomah County and found the following him on 6 cards. They were mostly address changes and where he changed from one party to the next, but one card had other helpful information. Here is what was on the 6 cards:
1) Name:CURIK, Vaclav
Party:Repbulican.Precinct: 239.
Address:1101 N. Larrabee Ave. (between Clackamas and Halsey).
Occupation:Marine Cook & Steward.
Born in:Czechoslovakia.Naturalized:21 March 1940, Portland, Oregon, U. S. District Court.
Father:Vaclav CURIK.Mother: Anna CURIK
Card date:16 Sept. 1940.
2) Address:1111 N. Crosby Ave. (between Halsey & McMillen)
Occupation:Marine Cook.
Party:Democrat.
(this was to change the party from Republican to Democrat, and note the address was also changed.)
Card dated: 29 Sept 1942.
3) Address:1111 N. Crosby Ave.
Occupation:Marine Cook.
Party:Republican.
(this was to change the party from Democrat to Republican.)
Card dated:21 Sept. 1948.
4) Address:8018 SE Duke St.
Occupation:Marine Cook.
Party:Democrat.
(this was to change the party from Republican to Democrat.)
Card dated:8 May 1950.
5) Address:216 NW 3rd Ave.
Occupation:Marine Cook.
Party:Democrat.
(this was to change his address.)
Card dated:27 Feb. 1956.
6) Address:2126 NW Irving Ave.
Occupation: Chief Steward, Boat.
Party:Democrat.
(this was to change his address.)
Card dated:25 Sept. 1958.
There is a date stamp on this one with the following information: "Deceased, 5 Aug. 1960."
(Research Note:This is not the date of death, but the date they stamped he was deceased on the card, which was about 2 months later.)
I checked only some of the available R. L. Polk's Portland City Directories. Some of the spelling of the names were different.
1938, 1939, 1941:No listing.
The book for 1940 was missing.
1943-44, page 385: CURICK, Vadar, USMC, r1111 N. Crosby Ave.
1952: No listing.
1953-54, page 252: CURIK, Vaclar, cook, r8018 SE Duke.
1955, page 252: CURIK, Vaclav, seamn, r8018 SE Duke.
1956, page 234: CURIK, Valcav, seamn, r8018 SE Duke.
1957, page 246: CURIK, Victor, seamn, r216 NW 3d ave.
1958: No listing.
1959, page 233: CURICH, Vacua, h2126 NW Irving.
1960: No listing.
(Research Note: The spellings were different but close, and the addresses matched the ones I found in the "Foreign Voter Registration Cards for Multnomah County". Therefore, they are all one and the same person. I didn't find any listing of a wife for this period of time, and he was the only one listed for this surname.)
I also called some, but not all, of the funeral homes and cemeteries in our area. None of the ones I called could find him in their index. I checked the online index for the Willamette National Cemetery (cemetery for veterans). I didn't call them. The online index doesn't contain all the names, but does have a large portion. He wasn't listed in the index. I checked there because of the entry in the 1943-44 City Directory showing "USMC."
Funeral homes/cemeteries I called were:
Rose City Cemetery
River View Cemetery
Riverview Abbey Funeral Home Mausoleum & Crematorium
Portland Memorial Mausoleum
Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home
Mt. Scott Funeral Home
Metro Pioneer Cemeteries (They take care of 14 pioneer cemeteries in our area.)
Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery
(Research Note: Mt. Scott Funeral Home said they had a CURIK, but the year of death was 1919.)
I looked at Ancestry's immigration information and found that CURIK was the cook on several vessels, but you have probably already seen that information. Early 1900's census records also turned up a Vaclav CURIK and wife Anna as in-laws. These might probably be your Vaclav CURIK's parents, as noted above on the Foreign Voter Registration Card.
Sorry I couldn't find an obit for you.
