William & Jemima Grant came to the US in 1888, according to the 1920 Soundex (I only looked at the soundexes - not the actual schedules). William had filed his first papers.
At 1910 the household consisted of:
William, age 59; Jemima, age 55; John, age 30; William, age 28; James R. age 22; and Geo. P, age 16. George was born in Oregon, the others all in Scotland.
I don't find them in the index for 1900.
1920 finds William S. living with his widowed father, William, both on Linnton Rd. Next door is John, and his wife Annie, age 38. A little further, but still on Linnton Rd., are Geo P and his wife Bell, aged 22. There is a James C. Grant living on Linnton Rd., with a wife Effie, 38, born NE and a daughter Irene, 16, born OR. I don't know if this is William's son.
The foreign born voters registration was very fruitful.
William Grant, of Linnton, was naturalized 23 July 1918 in Portland Circuit Court. He gave his birthplace as Alyth, Scotland.
John Grant, of 10182 NW 107th, was born in Scotland, he was naturalized in US District Court at Portland on 19 Dec 1927. It notes his registration was cancelled in 1941 for failure to vote.
James Reed Rant, of 6947 NE Alameda, was born 4 July 1887 at Alyth, Scotland the son of William Grant and Jemima Reid. His wife is Agnes, born in California. James was naturalized 19 Apr 1918 in Martinez, California Superior Court, certificate #825309. The card is stamped "deceased Sep 27, 1962"
William Grant died in 1924, and an obituary is in the Portland Oregonian on 3 June 1924 on page 6.
Jemima Margarite Grant died 17 May 1913 in Multnomah County - she's not in the obituary index.
In the 1912 City Directory, James R., William, and John are listed as the proprietors of Grant Bros. - cigar & pool, at Linnton.
I looked around for the Peter Reid you mentioned, and found no sign of his having been here - but it was just a cursory search.
I don't often get to the public library (where the newspapers are on microfilm, but might be going soon. If I do, I'll get a copy of the obits for you.)
Hope this helps.
