Nathan Thomas Hankin Harris
I am trying to find information about Nathan Thomas HANKIN HARRIS who apparently died in Multnomah Oregon in September of 1955.Unfortunately I am rather a novice when it comes to finding genealogy information in the USA - I'm far more used to New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain!
Anyway, I discovered the existence of Nathan Thomas HANKIN HARRIS on FamilySearch.org and am trying to see if he may solve a mystery on my Harris family tree.
According to the information submitted, he was born 14 August 1877 in Panmure Auckland, New Zealand to Gustavus Ralph HARRIS and Catherine Mary GILLELAY.He married Elizabeth Kate WILEY (also of New Zealand) in Utah on 6 January 1908. He died in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon on 19 Sep 1955.
At this stage, I am unclear as to whether the surname is HARRIS or a hyphenated HANKIN HARRIS.However, both names are capitalised on FamilySearch.org
I have been unable to find a birth listing for either Nathan Harris, Nathan Hankin or Nathan Hankin Harris in New Zealand - our historic birth registrations are searchable online.
What I do know, is that Nathan shares the identical birth place, date and parents as Thomas Harris on my family tree.I have a copy of the birth registration for Thomas. Family stories have Thomas dying in 1907.However, there are no matching death listings for him in the NZ historic Births, Deaths and Marriages.
I believe my Thomas Harris and Nathan Thomas Hankin Harris may be one and the same man.
I'm not certain how to go about proving - or disproving - this.Do death certificates from that era in the USA list place of birth? And parents names?
What I *think* I need is to find an obituary for Nathan and then possibly a death registration or death certificate.I've no idea how to go about finding either.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have a feeling that the information on FamilySearch.org was submitted years ago, possibly before computers and the internet made obtaining genealogical information easier.Yet Nathan's parents and place/date of birth must have been obtained some how.If this was via a birth registration from NZ, it would have shown that his name was not actually Nathan. This suggests to me that perhaps the information was 'from the horses mouth', as it were: Nathan possibly told his family in the USA that information.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Alison
