Hi Nancy,
You've done a great job of piecing together this family story.

You might be able to find additional information at the Oregon State Archives, http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpmultnomahdescrip.html . They have old birth records (1915-1924), delayed birth records (1865-1977), death records (1915-1924), marriage records, probate, etc.

I found some of the Polk Directories on-line.
1878-81 Portland, William was porter w/ Seller & Co.
1882-85 Portland, porter w/ M. Sellers, residence 141 NE Park
1890-91 Portland, laborer J C Carson, boards 314 O St.
1895-96 Portland, clerk Charles Hegele & Co, residence 612 Quimby
1897-98 Portland, solicitor M Seller & Co, residence 342-19th N
1899-1900 Portland, selector M. Seller & Co, res=same as above
1900-01 Portland, laborer NW Door Co., rooms 514 Overton

If you're interested in copies of these pages, contact the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, www.gfo.org who does research.

William and Cora did marry in 1885 as shown on the 1900 Census for Cora Slauterbach. You can request a copy of their marriage license from Genealogical Forum of Oregon, www.gfo.org/search.htm .

My hypothesis is that they divorced before the 1900 Census since William is listed as single on the 1900 census and Harry and Hazel are living with the Sanborn's on the 1900 Census.

". . . Earliest divorces were granted by the state legislature. Later, records were kept by the counties. . " See www.rootsweb.com/~ormultno/vr.htm . I'd check with Multnomah County.

John Slaughterback died in 1901 which is listed on GFO's index of death records (see www.fgo.org/search.htm). You can request a copy of his obituary from Random Acts Genealogical Kindness, www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Oregon, choose Multnomah Co.

I wonder if William and Cora remarried because they were together in 1910? Were they "living in sin" and that's why the surname is shown as Slaughter? Census mistake?

A William C. Slaughterback in 1910 was living in Portland Ward 1, Multnomah Co., OR.
Warren L. Smith, head, 42.
Many other men listed as partners.
William C., b. OR, 45, first marr @ 25, fireman city fire dept. (Living w/ Cora when he wasn't living at the fire station?)

A Harry Edwin Slaughterback was living at 105 W. Alberta, Portland on June 5, 1917. He was b. 26 April 1888, Portland. Occupation-shingle weaver, L. B. Menafee Lumber Co., Portland. He claimed an exemption form World War I service because of a wife and two children under 12 and a crippled left hand. Source: World War I Draft Registration cards 1917-18, www.ancestry.com.

I found the 1920 Census w/ Charles W, Dora and Eva Slaughterback. My hypothesis is that Charles W was William C and he married Dora abt. 1909 and Eva was their daughter. I'd look for their marriage license.

In 1920 Margaret Sanborn was living w/ the Wilson family in Rainier, Columbia Co., OR.
John F. Wilson, head, b. IA, 49.
Clara M. Wilson, wife, 46 (Margaret's dau).
Herbert Wilson, 25.
Jeroard W. Wilson, 18.
Ravenn Wilson, 15.
Kenneth Wilson, 8.
Edwin Wilson, 2.
Margaret Sanborn, motherlaw, widow, b. KY, 89.

A William Charles Slaughterback died 20 May 1925, Portland per death cert #1396. Source: OR Death Index 1903-98, www.ancestry.com.

You can order a copy of this from the State of Oregon since it's now 50 years after his death.

I'd try to get a copy of his obituary from RAOGK.

A Dora D. Slaughterback in 1930 was living in Portland.
Dora D. Slaughterback, head household, widow, b. MI, 62.
Lewis A. Marry, lodger, b. OR, 22, marr @ 19, truck driver fuel co.
Ellen C. Marry, lodger, b. UT, 24, marr @ 20.
Darrel J. Marry, lodger, b. OR, 3 10/12ths.
Albert H. Marry, lodger, b. OR, 2.

In 1938 Harry and Loretta were living at 10737 NE Fremont, Portland. Source: Polk Directory.

A Loretta Ell [field often shortened] Slaughterback, born=23 Feb 1893, Spouse=Harry, died 3 Sept 1985, Multnomah Co per death cert 85-15550. Source: OR Death Index 1903-98, www.ancestry.com.

I'd request a copy of her obituary too. You won't be able to order a copy of her death cert since it hasn't been 50 years since her death. Successful Searching.
