Sorry to hear about your families loss maybe I can help you a little or maybe confuse you as much as I get some times following the Sturgill journey. I'll start by saying "WERE EVERYWHERE". I have a large STURGILL book that was created by an (now) elderly gentleman named David Sturgill. He lives in N.C. near NEW RIVER STATE PARK (BOONE). There is a order number in the cover I will provide you if you like. I am able to follow our family back to the late 1600's. The Sturgills left Virgina and my line ended up in N.C., others continued on west to Oregon, as I have been told. My Aunt and Uncle are real knowledgable about our family line. There is a "STURGILL CEMETARY" that is perserved in the New River State Park, Joel Sturgill is buried there, my 4th/ 5th (? - confused) is there. I have been told of a sand bar on the snake river where some Sturgill's died crossing and has our family name as a reference. I haven't found it documented yet, nor have I been to the park yet (I'm going this Christmas)and to a small town named of course "Sturgills" located in the N.C. in the area where TN/VIR/N.C. meet . I am like you, I want to know where we ended up, who made the journey west. Hope it helps a bit.
