The Oregonian (Portland, Oregon) May 5, 1895 Page 3 A Wallowa Homicide A Dispute Over The Ownership of a Cow Ends in Murder Word has reached The Dalles of a tragedy at Enterprise last Monday morning. John Fleming, a young farmer living about 4 miles southwest from Enterprise, was shot and instantly killed by John Baslm. The two lived neighbors. (as written) Fleming and his 7-year-old son rode over to the Baslm ranch in the morning to look after a cow. Baslm and Fleming had some hot words about the cow trespassing on Baslm's property. Baslm, who was plowing at the time, unhitched his horse and rode on to his house, about half a mile away, while Fleming and the boy continued to search for the cow. Baslm soon returned, armed with a shotgun, and ordered Fleming off the ranch. They had some further words, when Baslm raised the gun and fired. The entire charge of the gun entered Fleming's right breast, piercing the lung cavity and causing instant death. Baslm rode over and told his brother what he had done, and then went to Enterprise and gave himself up to Sheriff Neal. Both parties are well known in Wallowa County. Baslm has been considered an excellent citizen, but is said to be a man of very high temper. The examination of the defendant, charged with murder in the first degree, has begun before Judge Olmstead. At the inquest over the remains of Fleming, the coroner's jury returned a verdict of murder against Baslm. Both parties connected with the tragedy have families, and the affair has caused a great amount of public excitement. The Fleming boy's story of the affair corresponds with that told by Baslm.
