Ron, thanks so much for your nice reply.
I found Ernest Benjamin first in NY on 1910 census working as a coachman for a Grace family. He was called Benjamin at tha time (as a grown man some people called him Benny--not the family).Whoever gave the info said he was born in Missouri and listed his race as "Misc."He continued to work for this family in 1915,as chauffer. Race listed asblack. Later census' list him as white. His draft registration lists him as black and Indian.SS application as Indian. All later census and documents list his occupsation as auto mechanic. Death certificate lists him as white. All documents list Portland, Oregon as birthplace.
I tracked that Grace family, who were from the east coast to Colorado in 1900.The man was listed as a speculator for an occupation. His children were born in several states, so I guess he was all over the place before coming back to NY. Since someone from that family gave my Jackson's birthplace as Missouri--I feel that, that may be where they initially made contact with him. Would explain how he got to NY.
I agree that Massi could have several spellings. I have obtained that death certificate on a Rose Jackson who died in 1893 and I don't believe she is the mother based on the info.At this point I'm going to see if I can find them as an intact family on the 1885 state census. FHC doesn't have that census on film in ther inventory, so I'll have to try other sources since I'm in NY.
Again, thanks so much
Elizabeth
