Hi Margaret, I found the Sears family living in 1850 in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., CA. John, b. Vh [believe this is Vermont], 39 yrs old, dairy; Darkus [their spelling], wife, b. PA, 31; Elizabeth J., b. MO, 13; Mary, b. MO, 10; Frances, dau, b. MO, 7; Jas B., b. MO, 8; Jos, b. CA, 4; Mathew Thompson, b. GeEng, 24, laborer and John Smith, b. NY, 20.

Then in 1860 I found Joseph living in Colusa, Colusa Co., CA. Geo W. Perigo, b. OH, 26 yrs old, farmer; Z. A., wife, b. NH, 33; Orisiann, dau, b. MA, 6 and Joseph Sears, b. MO, 13.

Now I'm confused because one Census says CA and one says MO. I'd look for more information about the family in Sacramento and try to get a birth cert for Joseph. I looked up all the family members and didn't find them on any subsequent Censuses.

Then I found Joseph in 1880 in Powells Valley, Multnomah Co., OR with the Powell family. That Census says he was b. CA, 32 and employee.

I think you need to resolve where he was born before moving forward. Successful Hunting!
