Read it again Judy. Henry was a Civil war Veteran, his wife (widow) collected his pension. His FATHER was William Williams. William Williams disappeared. Shawna and Lou. There will not be a newspaper article about the desertion/disappearance in Oregon. I doubt there will be an article about a desertion in Missouri. It would probably be a PURE waste of time to search any newspaper archives about a family desertion, unless it was a military desertion and the party was involved in crimes thereafter. If he disappeared suspiciously, there might be an article. Suspiciously means none of his clothes or belongings were taken, it was the middle of winter and his coat was left. (And no one used his credit cards...) He served with the 13th Regiment, Company D, Kansas Infantry. So, during/prior to hostilities in the Civil War, he was living in Kansas? This is probably immaterial since you are really seeking William. Since you appear to have access to the US census, you probably know just how many Henry Williams and William Williams there are listed. I am "assuming" you have tried searching for William Williams in earlier census. Because of the time being so long ago and the census of that era being so limited in information, it will be VERY difficult to locate him in a census. We are talking about a period of 1831 (I'm "assuming" that William was around for the birth of his son, or at least giving him that credit) to 1870. It would "help" to narrow down the years of disappearance by the census, if possible. By this I mean, if William could be found with the family in 1840, but not 1850, that would limit it to 1831 to 1850, a "bit" better. I have seen you have posted in Missouri. If you haven't already, I would suggest you also post on Rootsweb, at it has more of an audience. Here is the main site for Rootsweb. You can find Missouri in the Message Boards, which "may" have more readers than the Mailing Lists, but try both. Also check the Websites for Missouri, there are additional help in those sites. For additional assistance in Missouri, there are the volunteers at the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. BUT, they probably won't be of benefit to you until such time as you have identified where William might be located, THEN they might be of assistance: http://www.raogk.org/missouri2.htm If you do use them, read the rules first...only one volunteer at a time. All I can say... Since you are looking for a Henry Williams and a William Williams. Be VERY, VERY careful of the information provided, it is so very easy to go off on the wrong person. Identify and verify. Ron Bestrom Notify Administrator about this message?
