Does anyone have any additional information about this family, in particular Ira Crain or his father Charles A. Crain?

CHARLES A. CRAIN was born about 1815 (or 1821) in North Carolina. By 1850 he was in Wright Co., Missouri. About 1855 he married Mary “Polly” Young, born abt 1831 in Indiana, daughter of James Young and Rhoda Cornett. Their children were:
1.       Ira Crain, born about 1856 in Missouri
2.       Ida Crain, born about 1859 in Missouri
3.       Clayborn J. Crain, born 1861 and died 1907. Married Julia Ann Newton (this family stayed in Missouri). I don’t know if he was born before or after his father’s death.
Charles A. Crain was ”dragged from his home and family” by bushwhackers in 1861 and killed. His widow may have remarried (a man named Linder) – but I haven’t found out anything about that, or whether she had other children by second husband.

IRA CRAIN is listed in the 1880 census, in Precinct 7, Eastland Co., Texas:

Ira Crain, w, m, 24, head of family, married, farming, cannot read or write, b MO, fa LA [I don’t think this is correct], mo IN
C. P. Crain, w, f, 24, wife, married, housekeeping, b AR, fa KY, mo KY
Ema Crain, w, f, 2, daughter, single, b TX, fa MO, mo AR

According to family lore, EMMA CRAIN was born in “Red River, Indian Territory, TX,” or in Sunshine, Hamilton, TX (the latter seems likely since is it pretty close to where the family was living in Eastland County TX at the time of the 1880 census). She and her father went west “on the Oregon Trail.”

But, sometime before the trip west, something happened to wife “C.P.” and Ira apparently married again to Eva U. [surname unknown], born 20 Apr 1875 in NC They had at least one daughter, ULAH M. CRAIN, born 14 Aug 1893 in Texas. There was possibly another daughter, NETTIE CRAIN. Ulah was found in the 1900 census in Beaver Falls Precinct, Columbia, OR, living with her mother and stepfather:

George D. Bonney, w, m, b Oct 3, 1860, 39, married 4 years, b ME, fa ME, mo ME, laborer (timber), 0 mos. not employed, rents house
Eva U. Bonney, wife, w, f, b Apr 20, 1875, married 4 years, b NC, fa NC, mo NC
Ula M. Crain, step-daughter, w, f, b Aug 14, 1893, 6, single, b TX, fa MO, mo NC, at school, 5 mos.
Edna R. Bonney, daughter, w, f, b Oct 3, 1896, 3, single, b OR, fa ME, mo NC
Ruth C. Bonney, daughter, w, f, b Mar 25, 1898, 2, single, b OR, fa ME, mo NC
Delia H. Bonney, daughter, w, f, b Dec 27, 1899, 5/12, single, b OR, fa ME, mo NC

Family photographs identify the “Bonnie girls, Edna, Marie, Ruth & Gertrude” as Emma’s “half sisters;” another picture says they are Ulah Moore’s half sisters. Another photograph says “Nettie Crain was 15 years old…. To my sister Emma.” Another photo says “From Edna” and one of Emma’s daughters annotated it “Emma’s half- sister’s sister.”

Ira and his family must have traveled west not too long after Ulah’s birth in 1893, because in 1896 “Emma Crane” married Charles H. Webber, son of George W. Webber and Mary F. Brinn, in Columbia Co., OR.

Children of Emma Crain and Charles Henry Webber were:
1.       Dott W. Webber, b 1897 in WA
2.       Calvin A. Webber, b 1899 in OR
3.       Hilda E. Webber, b 1902 in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, CA
4.       Edith G. Webber, b 1905 in Oregon
5.       Clifford Alford Webber, b 1908 in Oregon
6.       Dustin Webber, b abt 1912 in CA
1.       Lester E. Webber, b 1915 in CA

I have not yet succeeded in finding Ira Crain/Crane in Oregon or Washington.

Pat
