The story about the torn down house certainly applies to 245 Madison. The early Eugene city directories show 245 Madison to be between 2nd Avenue West and the railroad tracks. Numbers like that are still in that block, so the general numbering system hasn't changed on Madison. These days that block of Madison is entirely commercial/industrial, and has been at least since 1979 when I first moved here. The closest existing numbers are 225 Madison (Multi-Craft Plastics, building supplies) and 255 Madison (Oregon Wine Cellars, a warehouse). (You can use these addresses in to see where I'm describing on a map.) There are still a few big, old trees standing in that block, indicating the neighborhood's residential past. The last time 245 Madison appeared in a Eugene city directory was 1955, so presumably that's about the time the house was torn down. The 1931 city directory and 1930 census indicates that there were some single family residences there then.
