Thank You Bill Miller, And thanks for the references. Actually, I have inherited both of those books. When Victor slipped in the word "regiment" in the third paragraph on page 348 it threw me off the connection with the Muster Roll I received from the SOS. I got started on this line of research when I came across a letter from my father that referenced The note on page 348 that mentioned my Great Grandfather Maj. James H. Russell. On page 353 a Captain Smith of the first dragoons arrived and "assumed command of the combined forces." So I presume he was regular Army. I have problems with the Army terminology. I wonder why Walling did not mention the Field and Staff officers in his enumeration of the 9th regiment. I also wonder what function the Lt. Col., 4 Majors and 4 Staff Captains served. I must find time for more study of this campaign.
