Thanks Laura. Late last night, I found both Edith Mary (Howard) Spalding and Frances John Spalding on the California death Index. I had run out of ideas and knowing that one of her brothers had died in California I decided to check that. One good thing about the California death index is that it gives the mother's maiden name, Edith's was Twells.

It is hard to say if that is the Robert we are looking for. It is a good possibility since many of the family did work for the railroad back then. Thanks for all your help. If you ever need in help in California let me know.
