States: Oregon: Jackson
Sometime between 1800-1805, six orphaned siblings traveled from County Down, Ireland to settled areas around what became Greenfield, OH (Ross, Highland and Fayette counties). James, the middle of three brothers, married Mary (called "Polly") Wilson 18 Mar 1812. He taught school and farmed land in Buckskin Twp., Ross Co. OH. One of their ten children was Mathew Caldwell, b. ca 1820, Buckskin Twp, Ross Co., OH. A later biography of James Caldwell mentioned that all of his children, except one, had moved from the area but his probate mentioned that Mathew was probably in Oregon by 1859.
The only Mathew Caldwell/Colwell whom I have found in the Oregon census was Mathew Colwell, physician who lived in Eden Princint, Jackson Co (1860), then Jackson, Jackson Co. (1870). This Mathew was born in OH and is the correct age. On 19 Aug 1862 he married Mary Jane McCormack in Jackson, OR. The 1870 census shows them both. Also at the same address is their 6 yr. old daughter, Lily D; Benjamin Adams, 14, b. MO; Peter Nichts(?), 19, b. Prussia; and, Stephen Stubek (?), 30, farm laborer, b. Austria. The 1880 census shows Mary J. as the wife of Daniel C. Courbane (42, miner, b. IA), with Lily D., 16, still at home. So, Mathew probably died between 1870 and 1880.
Does anyone know if there are any records available on line or on film by which I might find information on Mathew's death? Are there marriage records available for this period? I would like to find Lily D Colwell and her descendants, if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
