I'm assuming you have the 1900 census details already. But to add.
John, born August 1856 in Minnesota to both parents born in England, he was a traveling salesman, married 15 years (1884/1885)
Jennie, born April 1860 in Missouri to both parents born in Ohio.
Edith M, born July 1887
The 1910 is as you have. Noted was Jennie second marriage, Elbert's first, married six years (1903/1904). Jennie was mother of 4, 4 living. Elbert, 39, circa 1870/1871, was born in Missouri to father born in Missouri, mother in Iowa. Census enumerated on April 16th.

In the Washington Archives: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx I found a Certificate of Marriage between Francis E. Brooks of Kootenai County, Idaho and Edith May Colwell of Kootenai County Idaho, joined on 1 April 1904 at Spokane, Washington, in the County of Stevens. The undersigned, a minister was Henry Irving Rasmus, Pastor 1st M? E. Church. In the Presence of John E. Colwell and Elbert W. Owens, Witnesses.
So, it appears that both John and Elbert had an interest in the marriage of Edith. So, there is a possibility that John died before 1910. BUT, it is not "Obviously". The marriage to Owens may have been due to a divorce or a death of John. AGAIN, JUDY, you can NOT make these WILD assumptions. Again, I use the word, Again and Again.
This Washington Archives site also showed some "frontier justice" cases involving a John E. Colwell in Walla Walla County in 1884.
The Idaho Death Records 1911-1956 did not show applicable Colwell or Owens.
Now, where did they go by 1920? Yes, there was the great influenza epidemic in 1917. I don't find Elmer/Leon in the World War I Draft Registration Card image database, but that just means either I didn't find him or his card was not in the image database. It doesn't mean he was dead by then.
I did several searches in the 1920 and 1930 census. I looked for ANY Gladys, born plus/minus 2 years of 1895 in Washington, with mother born in Missouri. While there were serveral in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, none had a father born in Minnesota. One possible had a father born in Kansas, living in Kootenai County, ID. But, there is no way to determine if this person was accurate.
Since you posted back in August, you may have already found everyone. If you have more clues, post them.
