I am not a member of this family, but have found some information on Helen May McDowall, former resident of Oregon City, Oregon and West Linn, Oregon, from the late 1940's until her death in 1973. I'm posting it here for any future family researchers.

The Oregonian, Wednesday, February 21, 1973, sec. 3 page 7 col. 7, Funeral Notices. Research at Lake Oswego Public Library, Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"McDowall--Helen M., 4997 Summitt St, West Linn; Feb. 19: age 59; beloved wife of Neal; sister of Mrs. Margery Eaton, Portland; Friends invited to services Hillside Chapel, Oregon City, Thursday Feb. 22, 1 pm. Friends who wish may make donations to the Helen McDowall Scholarship Fund, care of Hillside Chapel."

Lake Oswego Review, Thursday, Feb. 22, 1973, page 10, Obituaries.
"Mrs. MacDowell"
"Clackamas County Home Extension Agent for 21 years, Helen Mae (Mrs. Neal) McDowall, died Monday afternoon at a local hospital. She had been admitted only hours before with a cerebral hemorrhage.

Mrs. McDowall was born May 17, 1913 in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she grew up and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She taught home economics in western Nebraska before she and her husband moved to Oregon about 30 years ago. She earned her masters degree at the University of Oregon, and taught at Oregon City High School before becoming Clackamas County Home Extension Agent.

Mrs. McDowall was a charter member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Oregon City Branch of American Association of University Women. She also belonged to Oregon City Soroptimist Club and the Oregon Home Economists Association.

Mrs. McDowall lived at 4997 Summitt St., West Linn.

She is survived by her husband, Neal; a sister, Mrs. Margery Eaton, Portland: and an uncle, Otto Steffensmeyer, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Hillside Chapel, with the Rev. Dwight Townsen, Oregon City United Methodist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Helen McDowall Scholarship Fund, which may be made through Hillside Chapel."

(Research Note: In the heading of this obituary Helen's name was spelled MacDowell but in the article it was spelled McDowall.)

There is additional information about Helen McDowall at the OSU (Oregon State University) web site under "Helen McDowall Memorial Scholarship Fund." It starts as follows: "In 1973, the Helen McDowall Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in Helen's memory." It goes on to say she was an Extension Home Economist for 22 years in Clackamas County and was an Associate Professor at OSU.

(Research Note: Helen died in 1973, but the directories still listed her with her husband, as follows, up through the last book available, for Oregon City/West Linn, Oregon, in 1984: McDowall, Neal O & Helen M; electn h4997 Summit St (WL))

In December 1940, a family history book was sent to Helen McDowall from Dr. A. A. Heinemann, of Wasta, South Dakota. Helen was living in Harrison, Nebraska at that time. The book was all written in German, and Dr. Heinemann (Physician and Surgeon, Surgeon for C. & N. W. RY) said his parents had made a trip to Germany and had brought it back from Emden. The title of the book was "Stammbuch der Ostfriesischen Familie Muntinga," I. Ausgabe. Juli 1911. It looks like Helen was researching the following surnames from the book: Muntinga; van Borkum; Steffensmeyer. (Helen, or some other researcher, wrote in some information they had found on the name "Steffensmeyer" as being someone who had married into the "van Borkum" collateral line.)

One last note, Neal O. McDowall, Helen's husband, died in West Linn, Clackams County, Oregon, 15 March 2006.
