Opdyck Family Genealogy Forum

the name has been traced to one Alfred Op den Dyck in Holland, 1365, hung for unspecified charges. I learned this in a book I found in the Bucks County Historical Society Library in ???, Pennsylvania. The title, I think, is "Op den Dyck Geneology." Researched and written by a decendent and published in about 1890. If anyone knows where I may obtain a copy of this book, I would sure appreciate hearing from you.
So, the name originated as Op den Dyck. The first recorded immigration was in 1635 in Dutch Neck, Long Island, according to the above referenced book. The book shows the family tree with the variations in spelling. The "den" was removed: Opdyck. Became Opdyke, and later the "O" exchanged for "U," and the "Y" for "I" in all permutations. With education at a premium in 17th and 18th century America, People spelled it as it sounded. Being illiterate, one was not able to offer correction.
My own line comes from William G. Updike, a merchant in Lambertville, NJ. He was one of several brothers, and had many cousins of the same name. After four generations of only one male child, I have three Updike sons, and three Updike grandsons.
So, if the "Op den Dyck Geneology" is to be believed, friends, we are all decended from the same guy over the past 475 years.
