Problem with Merge/Append feature?

I am attempting to help a friend merge two of family tree maker files. Both files are two different versions of the same file. Here's what happened that got him into the situation...

1. One day he tried to open his normal file, and it wouldn't open.

2. Sadly, he thought that he had lost 1,000 or so names as he then started using an older version of his file, for a couple of weeks.

3. I helped him find a backup of the oringal file, which made him happy because the 1,000 names were back.

4. However, he said he had probably added another 250 names to the older file, many of which were not part of the 1,000 that he had thought he had lost.

I tried to use the merge feature to help him merge/append files option to merge the two files together. Since most of the 34,000+ names in the file were the same records, I attempted to use the "Do not merge, just add new records without merging" so that the program would skip all the duplicates.

Unfortunately, it seemed to think all 34,820 records from the old file were new, so I aborted the merge/append. :-( Shouldn't it be able to compare the files and see that most of the records are exactly the same and skip them? Is this a bug? And has it been fixed?

He is using version 16 of the program, but also has either the 2010 or 2011 version but has not installed it yet because he says he hasn't wanted to deal with learning about the changes in the upgraded version. Would upgrading fix this problem?

Any other ideas?
