Using a family file on a flash drive

I would like to be able to view (not edit) my data when not at home or on a lap top without having the program and that data on the laptop. I have the FTW program loaded on the flash drive as well as my family file. When I try to open the data I get the error message that the family file has to be saved to my hard drive. Is there a way around this? How is a flash drive different from a CD full of world family trees?

Thanks
Marie.
