A detail family history does not exist.
In the early 1900's Rev Patrick Woufle of the National Academy of Ireland spent many years striping English names of the various coruption, tracing them back to older forms of their Irish originals. A mammoth task.He had the assistance of many Irish scholars, access to the Irish Annals and the blessing of the Gaelic league, the National language movement. This work is my reference. Our family he traced back as follows; Melia,Melly,Mealley,Meally,Malley,O'Mealy, O'Meally,O'Malley,O Maely,O Mally,O Mallie, O Mailie and O Maille.
The O'Maille clan he records "were chiefs in the west of Co Mayo and celebrated as naval commmanders"
I'm happy with this.
