Kate,
There very easily could be more than one Roderick (Rody)O'MEARA. Do you have any dates for this Roderick O'Meara of yours?
My Roderick was b. abt Sept 1835 in County Tipperary to Timothy James and Catherine O'MEARA.The O'MEARA family immigrated to London, Ontario, Canada about 1850-52. My Roderick would have been 15 or 17 at that time.In 1860-61 Roderick came to Michigan and settled near Port Huron in St Clair County. He m. 1 May 1862 to Mary Ann KENNEDY, b. August 1842 in London, Ontario, Canada.I have a copy of the marriage certificate from St Stephen Catholic Church in Port Huron.Rory (as my family has always called him) enlisted in the 4th Michigan Cavalry, Co B in September 1862. He was mustered out of Ft Wayne in Detroit in July 1865. By Sept 1865 he had re-enlisted in the 190th US Infantry and was sent to Ft Sumner, NM.He was mustered out of Ft Sumner, NM in 1868 when the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation failed.
In 1870 I found Roderick on the MI US Census as a farmer in Clyde Twp, St Clair County, MI ... not far from Port Huron. He was with his wife, Mary Ann and their children Annora, John, and Mary.In 1880 I found him in the MI US Census under the name John O'Mara ... same location with his wife Mary Ann and children Annora, John, Mary, Margaret, Martin, Timothy and Francis Patrick. Two other children were born to the O'MEARA family ... Flora and William in 1880 and 1883 respectively.
In the Special Census of 1890, he was listed as having filed his Civil War pension applicaton in San Antonio, Bexar County Texas.
In 1894, Roderick was admitted to the Michigan Old Soldiers' Home in Grand Rapids, MI.I have the entire archived record of his admissions and discharges from the Home from 1894 til 1921.
He was listed as Roger O'MEARA in the Troy,NY city directory in 1922. At that time he was listed as being "removed to Michigan".This is the last we hear from Roderick Alphonse O'MEARA aka Rodney O'Meara, Rody O'Marra, Rody K O'Mara, Rory O'Meara, John O'Mara, Roddy O'Mera, and Roger O'Meara.
I don't think this is the same Roderick you have Kate. But if the dates correspond, please let me know.PA was not a known destination of my O'MEARA family.
Happy Hunting and let me know how your search goes.
