The term "U.S. Infantry" was very a specific term that described regular army regiments as opposed to volunteer units, but regular army numbering went nowhere near that high.Any sizeably populated state could have numbers as high as 87 - New York and Ohio, for certain, but I would think Illinois, too.I don't know about Michigan.Since he was with a Michigan outfit, I'd check Ohio first.
