O'Mara of the 87th PA Inf - Civil War
Looking for info on Civil War veteran Michael O'Mara, who served with Company A of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The regiment mustered in York in September 1861.O'Mara also spent three months with the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry.
He was born April 26, 1839, in Limerick, Ireland, and died April 13, 1916, at the soldiers' home in Dayton, Ohio, where he lived the last eighteen years of his life.He had also lived for a time in Huntingdon, Cabell County, West Virginia. He is listed in the 87th roster as "Marra" because the captain thought "it more convenient" to call him that.He was twice captured and the second time sent to Andersonville.O'Mara, living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the outbreak of the war, was apparently illiterate, but he was smart enough never to marry.
