If you could provide detailed information on the sons who emigrated, perhaps they could be found on one of the Swedish emigration databases or another source. (Birthdates, a year or two or three of possible emigration years, a town or towns where they were known to live after emigrating, etc.

You need to be more specific about when they emigrated since the "late 1800s, early 1900s" was a time of exceedingly heavy emigration from Sweden. There is also the problem because what exactly do you mean by that range of years? To me, late 1800s means approximately 1890-1899 and early 1900s means approximately 1900-1910.

If "Olaf" Jonsson was the father of Kajsa, then her "maiden" name is easy. She would have been Kajsa Olofsdotter (daughter of Olof) or the short version: Kajsa Olsdotter (daughter of Olof), because in 1830 the patronymic naming customs were still quite common. Read about Swedish naming customs in the interesting articles on the SweGGate site.

Women in Sweden in those days generally did not use their husband's patronymic name after marriage. They kept their own patronymic names. If Kajsa used Olson later, that was most likely not when she left Sweden but after she arrived in the U.S. (or wherever she moved after leaving Sweden. You didn't actually say what country she lived in afterwards and really we need a town or towns to help out.)

The Emibas CD was made from registrations in the Swedish parish before leaving Sweden. (It is about 75% complete and is much less complete after the mid-1890s.) Here are some possibilities for your Kajsa but none of these would have been the daughters of an "Olaf".

This one would have been the daughter of an "Olaf" but she didn't leave alone. Since you didn't provide the names of her children, I can't know if this is your person.

It is not possible to help, however, since there are no certainties to work with. The above are possibilities and probably they are unlikely possibilities. I assume you know who the sons were and I assume you know information about those sons.

There is no point in checking the Emihamn databases (emigrations from Swedish ports but not all Swedes left through a Swedish port) without more information, including her patronymic or other "maiden" name, where she was going, when she left, and so forth.

If they lived in the U.S., the U.S. Federal Censuses for 1900-1910-1920-1930 provide a year (somewhat accurate, within a year or two or three) of immigration. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census provides a month and year of birth. If you haven't checked those censuses yet, be sure to do so and provide that information in your requests on the Sweden forum. Also tell specifically where they lived.

This page tells the sort of information you need to provide.

Olaf is a Norwegian spelling of Olof/Olov, the Swedish spellings of the same name.

There is a Sweden forum on Genforum and that is the place to post this sort of information. (Type Sweden into the "Jump to Forum" space at the top right of this page.) I have some of the necessary cds and other databases but no one person has all of them. This post is not detailed enough to work with, however and I don't know if the year 1830 is certain or if it is just an estimate based on her age at a certain time period. Please also provide sources of the information you provide so helpers can better judge any possiblities which are found.

Älvsborg län (county), which was once spelled Elfsborg, can be found on the historical map of Swedish counties on the following site. It is now part of Västra Götaland län, which can be seen in the modern map on the same page.

http://www.algonet.se/~hogman/swe_counties_map_eng.htm

A county has hundreds of parishes, however, so you need to provide details in order to find a parish where they lived at any point of their lives in Sweden. Records were kept in the parish.

If you can't find any detailed information on any of these family members when you use normal sources such as censuses, death certificates, marriage applications, obituaries, family resources, etc., then search for it using the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. The Swenson Center is an archive which does NOT have online records. It does have a website, however. This archive has records which are difficult or even impossible to find elsewhere. Many of us have found the parish name in their records.

You can obtain a booklet with an overview of Swedish genealogy, plus ideas on how to search for clues. The following url has a link to downloading the free booklet and also a link to ordering the booklet to be sent by mail. The booklet comes very quickly, so it is better than using up a lot of ink and paper copying the download.

I reread this post and your post after writing the above and now I realize that I'm not even sure whether Olof was the father of the sons who emigrated. I had first assumed that Olof was Kajsa's father and then I assumed that the sons were the sons of Kajsa but now I think the sons were the siblings of Kajsa. The name Olof Jonsson or Jönsson is very common. It means Olof, the son of Jon something else or Olof, the son of Jön something else or Olof, the son of Jöns something else. It hardly identifies a man to just provide his name and a county. There would be many thousands of possibilities just in that county.

I don't see any possibilities on Emibas (which is only 75% complete, as I said) for an unmarried Kajsa or Cajsa (same name) born 1828-1832 in Älvsborg län with a last name starting with Ol*. It might be easier to find the others (her brothers? her sons?), especially if you have a birthdate and full names.

Judy
