Hi Peggy,

The reason you see Pedro in some records is because the Spanish were in possession of Louisiana during that time period, and civil and Church records were written as Spanish documents. Pedro and Pierre are Spanish and French versions of the same name.

I have Pierre Olivier, born about 1755, husband of Magdeleine Loupe, as born in Catalagna, Spain, "Spanish Mallaroca." His wife, Magdeleine Loupe, was born in 1759 in St. John the Baptist Parish, La., daughter of Sebastien Loup and Catherine (Mente Monty) Minty.

Pierre Olivier's parents were Jacques Olivier and Maria Basle Cirais, who is referred to as "of Spain"

This Olivier family, I believe, is seperate in its Louisiana origins from the Olivier de Vezin family of Pierre Francois Marie Olivier Sieur de Vezin, and his wife, Marie Josephine Gatineau Duplessis, which came down from Canada and was closely associated with the French governor Vaudreuil. One family was from Spain, and the other from France. Although both families lived in Louisiana, they did not associate with or marry the same people. Noel's family lived at the Acadian Coast on the Mississippi before migrating to Opelousas and Church Point, and tended to marry into Acadian families, whereas Pierre Olivier de Vezin lived in New Orleans before some of his descendants removed to St. Martinville and New Iberia, and married into very aristocratic families of that time.
