Mary Jane Oliver, dau. of Joseph Oliver, m. Abraham Oliver, Shelby Co., IL, 1851
Posting 5154 in this forum gives an account of Joseph Oliver, but doesn’t give a source. It claims Joseph was the son of a William Oliver and the family was from Virginia.
I am interested in identifying the Abraham (sometimes Abram) Oliver who married Mary Jane.
Mary Jane was born in 1828 and died between 1890 and 1900. Her husband lived from 1824 till after 1900. They had at least one child, a daughter Mary E. (May, Mollie), who married James Babb.
I can’t find an Abraham Oliver in Illinois before that 1851 marriage who fits the data. I found one from Halifax County, Virginia, via Callaway County, Missouri, who does fit pretty well as far as names and ages go, but I can’t account for his going to central Illinois to marry, bringing his wife back to Missouri (there in 1860), then moving back to Illinois (1870 on). If my tentative identification is correct, Abraham and Mary Jane Oliver were probably related and met through their family. Here is what I have found.
Abraham Oliver was the son of Isaac Oliver and Catherine Faulkner, who moved from Halifax County, VA, to Callaway County, MO, about 1840. In 1850, Abraham was unmarried and living with his mother and a married brother in Missouri. The marriage was in Shelby County, IL, on Oct 14, 1851. In 1860, he was back in Callaway, with his wife Mary, his mother and an Oliver nephew (he and Mary had no children of their own in 1860). In 1870 and 1880, the couple was in Illinois with the daughter, who was born in 1861. In 1900, the widowed Abraham was living with that daughter’s family.
If, of course, the couple in Missouri is the same as the one in Illinois. I hope someone who knows about this family can help.
