Oliver survivors of the Sutledge wreck
Bowie brethren,
In May of 1846, the Brig Sutledge (or Sutledj or Sutley) left Pictou, Nova Scotia with a cargo of Scots immigrant families headed for the coal fields of Pennsylvania. In the first week of June, the ship went against the rocks in the fog off of Newport, Rhode Island. All of Charles and Margaret Bowie's children save my great-grandfather Robert (b. 1834 d. 1909) were drowned.I'm looking for anyone with knowledge of the story beyond that printed in "Out of these Roots" - the Bowie history of Robert and his wife Euphemia Craig's family.
Other passengers on the brig were surnamed:
Oliver, Howat, Fatkin, Love (Love supposedly wrote a book about the wreck), McMillen, Deneen, Frasier, Monroe, Loraine, Wies, and Smith.
I have located the monument/tombstone for the lost in a cemetary in Newport
