You may be right about the Oliver name coming from France to Scotland and then to northern England. The earliest English record of the Oliver name that I have been able to find is Peter Fil Oliver of Oxford in 1273. The French root name Olivier means "of the olive" or "olive branch" which is a universal symbol of peace. The Oliver family crest that I have has a motto; Ad Foedera Cresto (I grow for treaties).
At one time I had an address for a Clan Oliver Society in Edinburg, but I seem to have lost it. It was published in a book of Scottish clans printed in 1975, so it may no longer exist, anyway. If you are interested, I can relocate it at the library and forward it to you. I have heard some Olivers say that there was an Oliver tartan, but I have been unable to find such a thing. All records I have searched have stated that the Fraser tartan is the correct one.
