James Oliphant was born in 1797 in Gorbals, Glasgow to Thomas Oliphant and Agnes Branham. He was a Fish Merchant then a Spirit Merchant.
He married Ann Bryce bn 1799 who also stayed in Gorbals and was the daughter of Andrew Bryce and Ann Gibson. {Several years later Ann’s sister Christian married James’ brother Robert}
They had the following children:-
Thomas bn 1823 in Tradeston married Jean Neilson and died in 1860
Andrew bn 1824 Tradeston
Peter bn 1826 Tradeston
James bn 1828 Tradeston
James bn 1829 Tradeston married Catherine Cambpell then Mary Campbell {see separate posting} he died in 1901
David Bryce bn 1832 Gorbals
William bn 1833 Gorbals
Robert bn 1836 Gorbals
Alexander bn 1838 Bridgegate.
The mortality rate must have been high as only Thomas and James survived to the 1841 Census.
James the father also died pre 1841, his wife Ann died in 1877.
