Roddy, Thanks for the reply. My connection to the Oliphant family is through George Senyard, a distant cousin, who married Isabella Oliphant. I have no further details on the 1850 & 1860 USA census as the information listed was sent to me as a favour from someone in the USA and just listed the names & ages. The family is found in the 1841 Census for Scotland as follows; 1841 Census Gibson & Cross St, Glasgow. James Olephant 35. House Painter. Scotland. Eliz Olephant 20. Ireland. Melville Olephant 6. Lanarkshire. The family? migrated to Canada first as Isabella was born in Canada in 1845 and then on to the USA in 1848. James & Melville Olephant were both house painters as was George Senyard. I can find no birth details for a Melville Olephant on the IGI or through Scotlands People in Scotland. On the face of it I would think that the names & details from the letters are just a coincidence but if I could clear up some details if possible please. 1. IGI David Oliphant married Janet Smith, Kircaldy 17 May 1816. Is this the Jessie Smythe mentioned? 2.Mary Oliphant in her second letter mentions that David Oliphant is her grandfather...who would be her father? 3.Rosa Reid, daughter of Isabella. Would Reid be her maiden or married name? 4. You mention in your last reply if I know any of the dates except that of your father. No I don't...but which one is you father? 5. Regarding the letters, what does SGO stand for? I have spent some time trying to find a connection but without luck so far I am afraid but more info is needed.
