Dear Rebecca, I have been working on the Maryland Oliphants for the last month or so. The following is from an e-mail which I sent to someone recently. Whilst it does not directly answer your questions, it does add another element to the picture:- "I have been dredging through old e-mails and information and I looked again at the information which you sent to Robert Olifent and I have put most of it into chronological order and then compared it with other information which I have. The result is more than a little surprising:- 1654 William Oliphant (first William) witnessing a will in Norfolk, Virginia. 1661 William Oliphant's land mentioned (I assume in Norfolk, Virginia). 1686 William Oliphant's (presumably second William, judging by dates) son, John christened (a brother to Duncan perhaps?) in Northumberland, Virginia. 1689 or before, Elizabeth Oliphant, widow of William Oliphant, married James Waddey (probably in Northumberland, Virginia). 1689 William Oliphant's will in Northumberland, Virginia. Date unknown, James Waddey's will in MD. Names step sons William (third William) and John. 1724 William Oliphant (third William this seems late, there may be a generation between) of Coxes Fork has daughter Margaret. 1736 William Oliphant marries for the second time. 1742 Will of Isaac Toadvine. Date unknown Matthew Oliphant (eldest son of third William) of Coxes Fork marries widow of Isaac Toadvine. 1776 Matthew Oliphant's will, naming children William (fourth William); Matthew; John; David; Thomas; George; James; Hugh; Rachel; Ann; Ginnet. In case you were wondering why I am listing all of this, in the previous emails you said that Coxe's Fork is at Rockawalkin. I found the following on the internet:- Edward Gibbs to Thomas Cox Coxes Fork 300 At head of Rockawalkin River back in the woods from the river September 19, 1681, p. 263 William Stevens to Nicholas Toadvine Gernsey 150 Back in the woods from the waterside between the head of the Wicomico River and Rockawalkin River at the head of Paslandible…. March 1, 1680, p. 239 This is in Somerset County in MD. So the family were in VA, then James Waddey seems to take them to MD. However, it may be co-incidence, but almost all of the names of the children of Matthew are also the names of many of Duncan's descendants. Also you said that you were told by a researcher that Oliphants in NC had come from MD. Similarly, the Oliphants of the Oliphant Rauch Book started in MD and went to Ohio. The Oliphants in the book "William Oliphant of NC" moved to Indiana. If you compare this information with the migration patterns of Duncan's descendants, it is a close match. What does seem factual is the straight line descent of the Oliphants in VA for one hundred years through to MD. I have also just noticed that one of Duncan's children, Ephriam died in Virginia. Where did one of Ephriam's children go? Well Ohio of course where else? Nobody is looking at the bigger picture and the possibility of this being the origin of Duncan as well. VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND NEED TO BE PROPERLY INVESTIGATED. Here is some more:- Maryland- Somerset tax records,1730s Posted by: Nancy Stein Date: March 03, 2001 at 15:00:01 of 1206 1731: John OLLIFAN taxed with James LONGGO & George MCGLAMERY in Wicomico 100 1733 Wm, George & Edw MCGLAMERY; Mathew OLEFENT in Wicomico 100. 1734 Matthew OLIFAN & Edward MCGLAMRY taxed together, Wimico 100. 1735: George OLIFER. Jeanne, you also mentioned that you had a record somewhere of the name or location of the first William's land in Virginia. I think that this is now crucial information. Yours aye, Roddy.
