James Oldham marr to Leah Stephens... but who are these other Oldhams?
WE know that James Oldham marr Leah Stephens 02 Jan 1774 Shelburne Parish, Loudoun CO, VA --Marriage Performed by Rev. David Griffith. It seems that Leah was the sister of Sampson Stephens, both the children of William, though some list Sampson as Leah's father in error.
WE know that on 29 August 1776, in Loudoun CO VA (adj to Fauquier CO) there was a Lease from Lord Fairfax to James Oldham of Loudoun CO & wife Leah & infant son Stephen, land was in Western Loudoun CO Wit: Sampson Stephens. This for 100 acres in Loudoun CO on banks of the Shenandoah (Frederick CO, VA, DBk-17, p193-194).
WE know that in June 1780 this James Oldham is listed in the "List of Surveys" (236a) on Home Creek, land in Henry CO VA, where Leah's sibling (Sampson) also removed to. We know that James & Leah subsequently removed to Sevier CO TN, and then on to Fayette CO, Indiana. I believe that they were !not! in Caswell CO NC as some list. I believe that this is a different Oldham group who others have confused.
Back to Henry CO, VA...
During the time that James Oldham owned land in Henry CO, VA, there was also two other Oldham boys living there (also on Home Creek). Home Creek is not a large creek, only a handful of folks lived adj to it. Among others (near by) were some the Stephens boys (= Sampson Stephens et al).
Trying to understand who these two other Oldhams were that were living in Henry CO VA during this time period and would appreciate any direction.
This particular record helps to shed some light on this group...
NOTE: 29 Dec 1792. Henry CO, VA DBk-V, p.7 - Power of Attorney. We, Mary Oldham, John Oldham and Thomas Oldham of Henry County, and Winford Nevills and Mary Oldham of Pendleton CO, SC, have a Negro named George, left to us by John Oldham, Sr, late of Northumberland CO, VA, by his last will, and as the sd George is now living in Fauquier CO, VA, we appoint Samuel Elliott of Henry CO, VA, Attorney to act in our behalf to sell or receive the sd George. Wit: Martha Marrow [listed as Morrow in other records], Elizabeth (X) Oldham. Sig.: Mary Oldham, John Oldham, Thomas Oldham, Winiford _____, Mary Oldham, Jr. proved: 30 Apr 1792
&
Apparently some of these Oldhams are siblings. Apparently this Winiford marr to a John Neville. Apparently Mary?Ann? later marr to Major Abram Kirkpatrick.
I should also note that this John Oldham and Thomas Oldham seem to be the same John & Thomas who removed directly from Loudoun CO, VA, to Henry CO, VA about the same time that my James Oldham and my Stephens clan did. & Being that they all show up in Henry CO about the same time, and on the same creek... This might indicate that these Oldhams were all "connected" somehow. I want to know if they were.
AND adding one more piece of the puzzle...
somehow, someway, my James Oldham (h/o Leah Stephens) is "connected" to George Oldham of Loudoun CO, VA, as they are both listed together (George is with my James) on one of the Loudoun CO, VA tax lists, and then they are near each other for several more years. My thought is that they are father and son, or perhaps brothers.
So, can anyone on this list tell me what the connection is (if any) between my James Oldham, and these brothers John & Thomas?
Thank you.
