Thank you for your response. I can only offer some clues as I would not say that your Pearce and mine relate - yet.
My Pearce family has always claimed to be English. They probably came to MA or RI in 1600s - very early, they say; not German at all - but they did intermarry with the Dutch in the 1700s.
1. My first thought is could there possibly have been two wives, Bertse and Pearce?
2. Next, my Pearces lived among the Dutch in Sussex Co., NJ and Orange Co., NY. It is possible my Pearce migrated to Orange Co. in the CT migration of 1760, or were in NJ earlier. They resided near the Jacobus family in Sussex Co. Many of these families moved to Ontario Co., NY near Lake Keuka and Lake Seneca about 1802-04. My gg grandfather William Willis Pearce, Jr. married Sarah Jacobus, with whom he supposedly grew up. Her cousin, Garret Jacobus married Elizabeth Wilhelm there, daughter of Mrs. Eleanor Wilhelm (I think her husband, deceased, may have been John Wilhelm, and I think they may have been from Orange Co., NY or Sussex Co., NJ also - somewhere in that area.) I have the Jacobus history of Maxine Harris, and when I find likely related families to those in her index, I try to identify the persons and, if related, send it on to the Jacobus historian.
3. The name Mary Ann does show up in my line. My gg grandparents Pearce mentioned above, named their first dau. Catherine after Sarah Jacobus' mother, and their second dau. Mary Ann (b. about 1823 in IN, died about 1843 there). Her grandmother was supposedly Mary Shepard Pearce, but her g-grandmother may also have been a Mary.
Additionally, I find the name "Mary Ann" where there is a Dutch or German influence, more so than with an Anglo influence. I think it comes out of Mariantje, a common female Dutch Christian name, that could easily be Anglicized to Mary Ann.
4. Also of interest is that my gg-grandfather Pearce had 7 brothers and 2 sisters, the latter being Clarissa (or Clarinda b. 1806) and Eliza (b. 1808). He was in Decatur Co., IN. His father with the other children were in Hamilton Co., OH then some followed their oldest brother to Decatur Co. Eliza disappeared from record after 1820 and Clarissa marries about 1822 in Decatur Co., and evidently expired between 1879-82 there.
5. My grandfather Pearce's sister married a Walker in Shelby Co., IN. That family was from NC.
6. There were Pearces in NC. They derive from New England. Some came from RI, some CT (I think) and some may have been from Scotch Plains, NJ (Union Co., carved from Essex Co., carved from, I think, Morris or Warren Co.) This NJ migration south took place overnight, escaping a cruel landlord. The first immigration to NC does not list Pearces, but more joined from the area, the first immigrants. I have not studied that story in depth. But some of my usual Christian names show in the NC Pearces - confuses the research, of course, because there are Willis and Wiley Pearces in GA.
7. I do not know of a migration pattern that came up from NC through WV and over into eastern OH.
That is the best I can offer today. Please let me know if you learn anything more that might be helpful.
