John Clark (Jack) Okey (1889-1963) was my grandfather. I lived with him from infancy and was present with him at his death in January 1963.

He was a descendant of Leven Okey. His grandfather was the noted jurist John Waterman Okey (died 1885), who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio. Family lore has it that Grover Cleveland planned to appoint him the U.S. Supreme Court but he died before Cleveland could do so. The family claimed descent from Col. John Okey the Regicide, but I don't know if that was more than supposition.

Jack Okey's father was Trevitt Wier Okey (died 1931?). His mother was Mame Francisco. She was the daughter of prominent early Los Angeles citizen Andy Francisco, who founded the Los Angeles Mirror ca. 1880. There is a street just west of downtown LA named in his honor. The Franciscos claimed descent from the Revolutionary War hero Peter Francisco, the "Virginia Hercules." The eminent California artist J. Bond Francisco was Jack Okey's uncle.

Jack Okey had one surviving brother, Pete. They were estranged before I was born, and I know little about him. Pete had a son Bill who sometimes visited the family.

Jack Okey married Marie Wilson (1885-1961), daughter of Horace Wilson and Sally Harris. Horace Wilson was part Mohawk and supposedly was descended from Joseph Brant. Sally Harris' family was very active in the abolition movement. Sally Harris' father was descended from the Paynes and was a first cousin (once or twice removed) of Dolly Payne Madison.

Jack Okey had three children: Horace Wilson Okey (1914-1999), Joan Okey Ratekin (1916-1992) and Karen Abigail Okey Libourel (1919-1996). There were two grandchildren: Francesca Ratekin Cromwell Zanetti (1951-) and Jan Michael Libourel (1942-). There are three great-grandchildren born after his death: Clark Thomas Cromwell (1971-), Trevitt Cromwell (1973-) and Adriana Zanetti (1992-).

I'll be glad to furnish whatever other information I can about my grandfather if anyone is interested.
