Hello from New Zealand I am descended from a Margaret O'Keefe - we are unsure of the exact spelling - Margaret arrived in New Zealand in 1841 on the Lady Nugent. 1841 in New Zealand history is very very early - (The Treaty of Waitangi - granting British Sovereignty was only signed in 1840) The story of Margaret is fascinating - she came to New Zealand (as far as we know - alone as a cabin passenger!) This is very unusual for the era. - She later married a John Smith who appears to be a mariner (although not necesarily on the Lady Nugent) Family Legend states that Margarets mother also came out at a much later stage and was made a paraplegic when she met with an accident when leaving the ship. I have only recently found Margaret's marriage records which list her details simply as Margaret Keef (the O is dropped and half the last name is crossed out as if spelt wrong and then left... It states that she is formely of Limerick, Ireland.... No other details are given... She was possibly catholic as her children were educated at Marist bros. School in wellington, New Zealand. I am enthralled by this Irish Mystery and would love to know where Margaret originated and why did she come to New Zealand.... Kind regards Rachel Scott New Zealand I am happy to share information and Ged.com files with anyone...
